Dental Sealants in Olney MD

dental implants before and after dental implants before and after

Dental sealants are a highly effective procedure that prevents decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth. This simple procedure involves us painting a tooth-colored acrylic “coating” onto the surface of the tooth, which “seals” the deep grooves, and acts as a barrier. As a result, this barrier protects the enamel from plaque and acids. For children and teens, the reality is that brushing and flossing alone cannot effectively remove all food residue, plaque, and acids from their teeth. With dental sealants, we’re able to give our younger patients an extra preventative step to fight against cavities before they even form! If you’re an Olney, MD resident looking for a dentist’s office that has decades of experience with dental sealants, then look no further. Smile Designs of Olney is the best dental office that you can come to in Montgomery County.

Applying Dental Sealants is Easy and Quick!

It’s easy to apply dental sealants, and it only takes a few minutes to seal each tooth!

  1. Dr. Lomke will first isolate the permanent teeth to be sealed using either a rubber dam or other isolation device so no moisture or saliva contaminates the treatment area.
  2. Next, he will apply a gentle dental gel to roughen the surface, apply a bonding agent, and delicately apply the flowable sealant material into the grooves of the tooth.
  3. It is typical for your bite to feel “off” for a day or 2. This usually self resolves.

Dental sealants can withstand the force of normal chewing for years along with normal routine check-ups. In some cases, we have had sealants placed that have last over 20 years! The process is also painless with no injections required!

Dental Sealants is Your Enamel’s First Line of Defense

Think of dental sealants as a raincoat for your teeth and enamel. When cavity-causing bacteria along with food particles form in your mouth, it produces an acid that may create tiny holes in your teeth. By applying this barrier before the decay begins, we are able to implement a preventative measure which, in studies, shows that decay can be reduced by nearly 80% in molars.

Dental Sealants Impact Children’s Dental Health

In October 2016, the CDC reported that sealants have significance as it relates to school-aged children. Only 43% of children aged 6-11 had dental sealants. The CDC also reported that children without sealants are three times more likely to form cavities than does who do not. Taking care of your dental health should start young, but both children AND adults can benefit from dental sealants.
